Reflections on the Boise Trans Day of Visibility Protest
by Meldowa
On Trans Day of Visibility, proud Idahoans gathered on the steps of the capital building to protest legislation that discriminates against trans people—people who are just living their lives, trying to make a living and survive. Whether they attended as allies standing against injustice or as people personally affected by the discriminatory laws, the protesters had a simple demand: do what's best for our fellow community members. All were welcome to stand against hate.
There were resources available for those affected by recent legislation as well as outreach to and from the LGBTQ+ community. The atmosphere was undeniably one of kindness, caring, and passion. Even with persistent rain falling during the gathering, the protestors were dedicated to speaking up. Speakers at the event were passionate and the drag performances were on point. The crowd appeared to be inspired as they witnessed each other standing up for the trans community, not letting those in power vilify them for being who they are and being brave enough to speak up.
