El Castor
Boise DSA adopted El Castor, the beaver, as its mascot January 15, 2026. Some reasons why:
The Beaver Drop: in 1948, Idaho Department of Fish and Game relocated 76 beavers by plane, to remote areas, because of property damage related to the dams they build. Beavers were endangered at that time. Idaho helped save the species once. In recent years though, beavers top the list of individual animals killed by US Wildlife Services every year because human infrastructure in the wrong place, gets damaged by the ecological infrastructure beavers build.
The human world is just a part of the natural world. Capitalism is like fire. Wildfire is dangerous, but beavers create wetlands which provide refuge for a wide variety of plants, animals, fungi and microbes. Allowing beavers in our country, their native home, has proven the most cost-effective, efficient and sustainable way to protect and restore our local ecosystems threatened and damaged by wildfire and extractive-type industrial farming methods (which is also capitalism).
